The
History of Wabeno... First settlers to the "little valley" of Wabeno were the Potawatomi and Chippewa tribes. There are two stories as to how Wabeno may have gotten it's name... One story goes that on June 2, 1880, a tornado swept through northern Wisconsin clearing a strip of land one-half to one mile wide extending from Antigo to Lake Superior. The destruction of the tornado allowed sunlight into the otherwise dense, dark forest. Our area came to known by the Native Americans as the "Wabeno" which means "the coming of light or rising of the sun". Another story handed down by a Native America tribe says that "Wabeno" means "Wild Swan". During their migration the swans would land on a local lake. Native American tribes would come from miles away to hunt the swans for food and for their feathers. The meat would help sustain them and the feathers were used to decorate tribal dance wear. The Chicago Northwestern Railroad made their first survey in 1886. In 1897 the rails were laid from Green Bay through the "little valley" which bears the name of Wabeno. The railroad brought farmers and business to the area. Development had begun. Years have passed, but we have remained a small close knit community. We pride ourselves on the beauty of our surroundings. We are rich in natural history, a good clean environment and a naturally pure water supply. |
